Food Lion Report Card - Grade "F"

8 weeks ago I decided to experiment by shopping at Food Lion.  Food Lion is hands down the closest store to my house.  However, I have never been successful at saving money there. After 8 weeks I am disappointed that nothing has changed and actually things are worse.

Negatives
* Coupons can not be stacked.  It is either a store coupon or a manufactuer coupon but not both
* Coupons do not double
* Prices are not competitive
* I am constantly harassed about my coupons at the Hateful Food Lion store.
* Management at the closest Food Lion is downright mean and nasty.  I had a return today - my very first return ever at A Food Lion Store - and the manager decided to take the highest coupon on my receipt and subtract it from the purchase price.  I told her that was not the coupon for that item.  She told me she did not know which coupon I used; therefore, she was going to subtract the highest one and refund that price.  I grabbed my receipt & product,  called her a 5 letter word, and stormed out of the store.  **Side note - I had no issues with returning the item at Trashy Food Lion.**

Positives
* Hateful Food Lion is in the same shopping center as the Post Office.  If you look down in the ground you find a plethera of gas receipts.  Next time Food Lion has a gas deal or some other deal...I think I am going to save my time, energy, and money....and just shop for trash on the ground.
* In the end we got (9) $15.00 Shell Gas Cards.  We have $135.00 in gas gift cards for when we drive to Orlando for our next Disney Vacation

Free Mentos Gum at Wags this week.  I traded last week for the $1/1 Mentos Bottle Gum coupon to use during Harris Teeters Super Doubles but 10 coupons arrived past the deadline.  Now I have reason to use them - at Wags.  I am also going to use a Rain Check for 99cents Turkey Bacon with cordinating .55/1 MQ

Late Post - HTSD Saturday

Saturday was a very hectic as Destruct-O and I traveled out of state for a Birthday Party.  I stopped at one Harris Teeters on the way home.  They were out of everything.  Lines out the wa-zooo.  And the creme dala creme of stink is they would not accept my $2/2 Lysol coupon stating Walgreens was not a competitor.  I was shocked.  Walgreens is less than 5 miles away.  I should have cut the Walgreen logo off.  In the end I paid 20 cents which was tax only.

Oh Lookie Lookie at What I found at Harris Teeters today

Just like with the Ragu coupon, this Wishbone looks like brochure but it is actually a $1/1 MQ exp 9/13/13.  Apparently there were Knorr Side Dish Qs too .60/2 - but they were all gone.

In addition I found this $3.00 rebate on Cracker Barrel Cheese (exp 12/31/13 Valid only in VA, NY, MS).  Ironically I just purchased 4 Cracker Barrel Cheeses a few days ago at Giant when they had their 4/$10 sale on CB Cheese.  I had (4) $1/1 peelie MQs so paid $6.00 plus tax for 4.  This is one of our favorites.  Now I can submit that receipt and get $3.00 towards my Disney vacation - YIPPY SKIPPY! :-)

I got ZVR overage on the Rounds and Tampax and should have gotten ZVR Always overage to absorb the Oreos and Ragu but alas I did not. Somehow only 18 coupons of my 19 coupons were scanned so once again I was overcharged.  This weekend I will go back to my favorite Harris Teeters and shop around midnight when my favorite cashier is there.  She doubles all my coupons no matter what so I get lots of overage. 

MyCokeRewards Points / Bonus Points Trade

I traded some regional coupons with a woman in Florida for diet code codes.  When I trade for something like this I never put a number on it.  I always tell the other person to decide what is fair. She was so cute and funny as she was did "Coca-Cola Math" to figure what was the fair exchange rate would be.  I have no clue what she was talking about with her "Coca-Cola Math" but it was cute as she calculated the exchange rate lol.  Bless her little heart, she even called Coke headquarters in Atlanta and spoke to them about points and bonus points.  We had a lot in common and really connected.  I sent her some unique and valuable coupons for her area and she sent me enough diet coke codes to max out my weekly account and open up a new account for my husband.....and max out his weekly limit too.....all with diet coke bonus codes.

VENT:  A veteran couponer on the forum has requested that he is in search of .50/1 Dole Squishem's from 8/11.  A newbie and myself post that we have the $1/1 Q.  Immediately he private messages me that he wants my $1/1 Q and to send them to the address listed.  No hello - no how are you - no what are you looking for - what do you want to trade for them -no goodbye- nadda- nothing.  So I politely  make small talk about his icon and ask if he would be willing to trade $1/1 Mentos.  Immediately he responds with "I am using that coupon."  Nothing else added.  Such a pompous arrogant attitude! 

I have something he wants....not the other way around

I have to work this weekend so I walked across the street to Bath and Body Works to take advantage of their FREE Sexy or Sweet 3oz lotion - no other purchase necessary. Every year I use these free lotions as part of gift baskets for my son's teachers during the school year

Week 6 of 8 at Food Lion

For the record:  I am done with Food Lion after this promotion is over with.

I have 3 Food Lion stores within 2-8 miles of my house.  My thoughts and opinions:
* Customer service at 2 of 3 stores is horrible.  The closest store to my house Food Lion Management is downright rude, aggressive, confrontational, and unprofessional.  This store will be known as hateful Food Lion.   
* Not a coupon friendly store at all.  They do not double coupons nor are you able to stack coupons.  Area competitor stores (Safeway, Giant, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Harris Teeters) allow stacking and double coupons.  Every time I use an internet coupon they claim it was photocopied. Photocopy?  How can they be photocopied if the unique number of each coupon is different?  If I were to photocopy don't you think I would have made it for a different value than 50cent or 55cent?
* Catalina machines to print the weekly gas promotion receipts seem to out of paper, jammed, or broken.  So now I have to go customer service to get a gas receipt and it is like pulling teeth to get one.
* Promotions: Safeway and Giant have far better gas promotions that Food Lion
* Sales: When sales happen at Giant, Safeway, Shoppers, or Harris Teeters they have more store items on sale.  There is not as much variety of sale items at Food Lion
*Prices:  Prices are not competitive at all.  The difference between Food Lion prices and their competitor prices are minimal.  Add in the factor that couponing is so difficult and I find I am actually paying far more for items at Food Lion.  

Summary of Week 6:  The one thing I am thankful for is the hateful Food Lion is next door to the post office.  I stopped by the Post Office this week and found these two little beauties in the parking lot.

TotallyTarget posted 2 days ago that many stores had finally cut prices to 75% off their toys  I went to my Target and sure enough it was true.  The problem is most of the stuff is picked through and gone.  This time I used a different strategy:
*Buy the toys when they first went on clearance (not the best price but that item was guaranteed to be in the system for future markdowns)
* Return and repurchase when the markdown was at 75% or better
* Look for other items when I did the return.

Target does not guarantee clearance prices but they certainly can not stop you from return and repurchase especially if the store manager is a single mother of 5 who is struggling to make ends meet.

In the end I spent under $80.00 for everything pictured plus 3 additional items *Because of a birthday party today missing from the stash is 1) Lego 10661 My FirstLego Fire Station 2) Marvel Spiderman 48 piece Lenticular Puzzle and 3) Disney Planes Movie Die Cast Dusty airplane - not on clearance just on sale since the Movie is about to come out soon)*

Weekend Kellogg's Code Round Up

Every weekend I round up the Kellogg's Family Reward Codes in the house while I sip my morning coffee.  If I don't cut them out my family just throws the box away when they have finished the product, along with the code.  I use tye-dye duck tape that we have laying around to put the boxes back together.  For the record- the removed codes and duct tape do not alter the taste of the product one bit ;-)

Inside is a coupon for .75/1 8-pack Powerade.  My family LOVES Powerade Zero the most.  Plus I just realized the other week they are a Coke product -which mean Coke Codes ;-) lol This week Powerade is on BOGO at Harris Teeters $6.99 ($3.49).  The coupon doubles to $1.50 which makes an 8pack $1.99 or less than 25cents a bottle for the family favorite.  That is certainly a stock up price for me.  I have one rain check and hope to get more RC during the week to use later.  The coupon expires in 2014 so that works perfectly with the rain check :-) I hope I can still find this book in the stores

Food Lion, why do you make purchasing groceries so difficult?

Since things went so well yesterday at my local store, I decided to go back for Week 5 Shopping.  This store is the closest to home so I was really hoping this time would work.  So with 4 leaf clovers, lucky pennies, and crossed fingers I go inside to do my shopping.  I decided to go to self check out because coupons seem to cause a major traffic jam at my store.  However, I did not realize that self check is only set up to accept 2 coupons-no more.  A manager came over and explained things so my transactions was suspended and resumed at the main check out. After everything was said and done....no Week 5 gas receipt printed out.  So I was sent to customer service.  Customer service told me that once my total got below $40.00 with coupons a gas receipt would not print.  I explained that was not true because for 4 weeks my bill was well below $40 and had always printed.  Finally after a long communicative exchange the manager conceded but very reluctantly and with rolling eyes.  The problem was she had no week 5 in the drawers so she had to write on my receipt that her signature good for a week 5 gas deal. 

I got (12) Ocean Spray juices; (2) Cheez Its Crackers; (1) Orville R Pop Corn; (2) boxes of Eggo waffles; (1) 4 pack of mild Italian sausage; (1) pack of boneless chicken breasts; (1) one lb of ground beef; (6) bananas; (1) container of grape tomatoes; (1) bag of carrot chips.  Paid $20.93 *I was shy the $40.00 mark by $1.88 so I ran and got 2 more Ocean Sprays juices with the blessing of the cashier-go figure*

Note to Self - My Coke Rewards Bonus Codes

Thanks to loudouncountylimbo   I try to enter one cap code and one bonus code a day (even if the bonus works or not...I still try :-)  I have also started a small stash of caps because I remember reading on another blog where this blogger would not enter her codes right away as she would save them.  This was because Coke will sometimes announce a limited time special code (bonus code or double points which are active for only a day or two) so she wanted codes on hand to take advantage of the a special offer within a limited window.  She would also help out at the local school functions so she could get coke codes.  I haven't reached that level of excitement yet ;-)  LOL LOL

I seem to only get 10 (for Walmart codes) or 3 (for ROO) bonus points.  I am not complaining just making a mental note  :-)

3 new coupon trading envelopes came today

Trading is a hit or miss.  Because I am new to the coupon trading forum I sometimes have to give more or at least the perception of giving more to earn "street cred."  I find the concept absolutely hysterical but I feel this ace reporter needs to report the coupon trading world truth lol ;-)

The contents of this envelope is proof of of the "game" of coupon trading.  This trade will be another homerun hit for me.

A coupon professional on the forum allowed me to trade with her because I had something she wanted.  She was arrogant and borderline rude.  In coupon dollars she got the better deal & I allowed her to think she had the upper hand because it played right in to her ego.  The reality was, there is no upper hand because the high dollar coupons I traded were worthless to me because my store does not even carry the item.  So while worthless to me they were valuable to her.  The coupon professional thought I was a newbie for whom she could pull the wool over on.  I allow her to think that ... even now. She dangled a carrot by offering a high number of coupons for my rare high dollar coupons.   She even said at one point well "I will be sending you over 30 coupons and you are sending me 8 so I am giving you the better deal in the trade." I wasn't stupid. I knew my coupons were rare and out of print.              

It was a difficult trade from the start.  She was the only trader in the forum that had a large number of coupons which is why I even put up with her trade.   The coupon professional would not send her coupons to me until my coupons arrived to her first because I had not built up trading "street cred."  Guess my security clearance in the real world is not enough street cred but I digress.  Because of the delay in shipment I missed the Barilla $1 sale at Giant and the 99cent Ocean Spray juice spray at Safeway. The coupon professional knew that the delay shipping would make me miss these deals.  My envelope arrived today with (22) Ocean Spray and (10) Barilla coupons.

Yep that Giant and Safeway deal are dead but there is always another deal on the horizon *evil laugh and grin*  Do not give up hope for all is not lost for our heroine in the world of sales and coupons because this week Harris Teeters has Barilla whole grain spaghetti 10/10 and a certain less desirable store has a BOGO sale on Ocean Spray!

The less desirable store.  I hate this store with their worthless sales and not so low prices ... so I was tempted by the the coupon devil.  I tested the Ocean Spray deal today at the stricter store by purchasing 2 BOGO items and using 2 coupons. I paid 3 cents.  No beeps.  No nothing.  They even wished me a good day as I left. I must say I felt a little vindication.  Just a little.  My now (20) Ocean Spray coupons & (10) Barilla pasta coupons are about to hit a home run this weekend.  Please Don't judge.

I am a total tea-a-holic.  I love tea - any kind of tea.  I rarely drink carbonated beverages; however, I LOVE the Coke Rewards program.  I particularly love the program during the holiday promotions.  The problem is if you don't drink Coke...how do you get Coke codes?  After seeing a Blog (thanks loudouncountylimbo)  I realized Coke caps are everywhere.  Add bonus codes and the little red cap on the ground now becomes a treasure.  

Now I found another little bonus to the Coke Rewards Program:  You can play the instant win games - the ones that normally cost 3 points a shot to play - 5 times a day for FREE!

1. Sign in to your Coke rewards account.
2. Go to the rewards catalog and pick instant win.
3. Click on an item, for example win a trip to see Taylor Swift.
4. Click on rules.
5. Scroll down to see Alternative method of entry and click on the "click here" link.
6. It gives you free points.
7. Use them and repeat until it tells you have played the game 5 times in a day.
Then you can play a different game 5 times.
8. The next day you can play again!
